to be taking. and i think it would be exactly the right decision to then send it back to harry reid and president obama and ask if harry reid and president obama are willing to try to shut the government down in order to insist that obama care be fully funded now, even though it could well push us into a recession. >> now, this is the keynote speaker. and still wanting to get rid of obama care. >> yeah, it would seem insane that ted cruz is fighting for the path. he is trying to bring back the mccarthy era in his general ramblings on capitol hill. that would seem crazy. if paul ryan, supposedly the most serious men in washington who all the belt take seriously, wasn't doing the same thing in his budget, trying to get rid of the affordable health care act, which is signed off on. they are stuck in the past, not able to accept the results of the last election. you know who would love it if they tried to shut the government down? democrats. they are digging this party's grave and i don't think they even know it. >> we'll have to leave it there. joy reid and dana milbank, thank you both for

news in the fight for gun control. senate majority leader harry reid has announced that he will in the main gun bill headed to the senate floor include safety bill that requires background check for all gun buyers, make gun trafficking a federal crime, and help schools upgrade their security. those are all key proposals that are long overdue, especially the background checks. that's key. but some critical measures have been left out. the assault weapons ban, limit on high-capacity imagimagazines new mental health bills have all been dropped. though they still get voted on as amendments, they won't be in the main bill. when those votes come, we'll need our lawmakers to do the right thing and show political courage. that's what vice president's message was today when he appeared with new york mayor michael bloomberg and relatives of newtown, connecticut. at one point, he spoke directly to the parents of a teacher who lost her life trying to protect her students. >> think about newtown. think about newtown. think about how many of these children or teachers may be alive today had he h

own. but with lower hopes for success. senator harry reid says he made the move to avoid republican obstruction. >> i want people to have the ability to vote on assault weapons, mental health, safety in schools, federal trafficking, clips, everything. but i cannot do that until i get a bill on the floor. i want something that will succeed. >> something that will succeed. the rest of the country wants that, too. in fact, a majority of americans, 57%, support an assault weapons ban. but apparently some in washington think that's not good enough. nearly 2,800 people have been shot and killed since the newtown tragedy. 2,800 reasons for our elected officials in washington to show some political courage. the time is now. americans want to move forward. lawmakers in both parties should move forward with the rest of the country. joining me now are mia malika-henderson and margie omar ra. thank you for your time. >> malika, what's behind this on assault weapons? why did it happen? i'm not sure i agree with this. >> yeah. i think you heard senator reid say it when he said he wants something
